While it is fine to play it without max gear, the absolut top tier damage comes with having everything maxed. Other classes often need some very important tripods and are kinda fine then. Like DB, needs like 5. For Gunslinger, every single one will push the dmg.Destroyer - Imagine putting all your eggs in one basket. Pro: great stats all around. Con: prone to missing important skills. Berserker - Auto-click simulator. Pro: best identity & 2nd best awakening. Con: long cooldowns & mana issue. Holy Knight - White bread of classes. Pro: can support while doing decent damage. Blade and shadow are both fun and enjoyable classes that are decent in their own right and very satisfying to use your combos. Sorceress is there to nuke things from afar. It's still doable with a support but it goes through much faster if you have a dps that has large aoes or that has higher movement speed/skills. You can easily switch to a more preferred class once you reach North vern, where you unlock knowledge transfer. Knowledge transfer allows you to skip the story to ... Gunslinger can be another good choice, though you're squishy, you have plenty of mobility, and your range on snipe can help you get uptime on mechanics. Warlord/Gunlancer is easily the best solo class. I think this is a somewhat risky answer.
